DAY ONE: What's a Subway?

I'm in New York and East Hampton for a week or so. I've been to NY a lot in the past few years, but I'm not gonna lie, I feel a little out of water here. If anybody has any good spots I need to be seeing, besides the obvious, while in the City or Hamptons, let me know below. I'll try and stay on top of searching the internet for random stuff to throw on ATG, but I will be extremely busy eating pizza and trying to figure out which train to take where. Screw it. I'll just take a cab.

Is that a... a... decapitated Cookie Monster passed out in the park? Yep.

my most creative moments have been on those trains. it's impossible to recreate a similar experience here in LA....(just avoid the L train at all costs).

if you have time take the A all the way up to the Cloisters, http://www.metmuseum.org/Works_of_Art/the_cloisters

enjoy!

If out in East Hampton try:
Cyril's Fish House - BBC drink with a rum floater. You may need to walk home.
Stephen's Talkhouse for music and people watching.
But really just explore SoHo and Brooklyn on foot.

Church St. Surplus... You'll find a plethora of vintage treasures from old military uniforms to beat up WWII bombers and more... It's on Church St. just before Canal...

If you have access to a car i would suggest checking out Floyd Bennet Field (south brooklyn), Ft. Tilden (the rockaways queens) they are both abandoned former military bases that have some neat stuff to look at and roam around through.

Alife is always worth checking out if in the LES.

...and Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is perfect on a hot day. I recommend the Black Sesame or Red Bean flavors.

If you have a chance to hit up Smith+Butler in Brooklyn, you won't be disappointed.

@Christopher-
I'll be back in the City next weekend.

@David-
Dude, I don't know. Brooklyn for sure. Right around the corner from the flag photo.

@AC-
Damn your surplus store being closed on Mondays!

For NYC, try lower east side, lower west side, union square, central park, the museum mile, abc carpet and home, fishs eddy and tinsel trading. And for bklyn, try the bklyn flea market on weekend.

For more about NYC, visit NY Art Beat, http://www.nyartbeat.com.

Have a wonderful time in NYC. The best city in the world.

I recommend the Van Leeuwen Ice cream truck (near Greene and Prince). Their mint chip is extraordinary.

Il Bisonte shop on Sullivan St. (near Prince or Spring I can't remember which) if you haven't been there

RRL type shop on 13th st near Union Sq (between 3rd and 4th aves.), easy to miss, no name or hours posted, a tiny vintage-packed eye feast.

Dirty Bird fried chicken, elegant hole in wall on 14th st west of 7th

Any outdoor public pool, for the sheer weirdness of this in New York. Plus they're free. Red Hook Pool in Brooklyn--near the (also free) IKEA ferry--and the Carmine St. pool near SoHo, are both fun.

P.S. Great blog!
Shantel
