Ive been on a book kick lately, especially out of print photo books on auto racing... all three of them. A friend told me about this obscure little release back in '72, and like a blaze orange-clad sportsman in Alabama, I stalked. At Speed by Jesse Alexander was the prey, Amazon was the killing fileds, and a couple hundred BUCKS later, it arrived on my doorstep. Words can't describe, so....
Nothing like early 70s Japanese muscle to get your day going (pause?). Sure, the Fast and the Furious franchise may have thrown the spotlight back onto these bad boys, but how can you deny their vintage luster? There are a few more in the queue before this one, but trust it's on the list for sure.
So, what happens when some of my favorite design superheros join forces? This. The collab between Environment and Commune is nothing short of perfect. Okay, maybe the prices aren't perfect, but can you really put a price tag on wood and brass stackable cubes? Yeah, you can. And worth every few thousand pennies.

I mean, what can you say? Rolex customizers are a dime a dozen these days, but when the end product is something that looks this damn clean, let them be a nickel a dozen. Those skeleton hands on that sub??? Seriously??? Go ahead and snatch one here, only 8k..... pounds.

Luckily for you, the pieces are still up online. Although much better in person (the wood frames and off-white matting really did the pieces justice) the exhibit can be seen here.

Sure, there are better Speedys out there, but I certainly can't hate on this one. White face, red hand, weird, bulbous "apollo" sub-hands... as is. The Speedmaster "Alaska Project" is discontinued but you can find them on eBay for around 4k if your heart do so desire. You'll probably even find one with the red anodized, aluminum outer case necessary when worn in temps between 145c-245c... although I'm not showing any pictures of that... because it's ridiculous and bums me out.
