Hobo Nickels

Okay, does everyone know about these but me? Forgive me if this is the case, but I'm amazed and hooked. The origins of the Hobo Nickel grew out of the introduction of the Buffalo Nickel in 1913. The "first generation" of carvings went to about 1940. These were carved by "Hobos" on the move and traded for everything from food, places to stay to shots of whiskey. Portraits of loved ones, famous men of the time, and historical figures were the most common subjects. Sorry, a lot of the ones below are carved on Buffalo Nickels, but are fairly modern pieces. How great are these? Again, please forgive me if this is something that has been talked about for years in this little circle and I just happened to miss the conversation. Check out the Original Hobo Nickel Society (OHNS) for all the information you could ever want. The below were gathered from various places on Google images.

Malin+Goetz: Cannabis

Are you seriously writing about a candle? Yes. Not very tough is it? I got one of these as a gift today, and let me tell you something, it's amazing. I want to climb inside it and live for a day. I'm not a candle guy, really, I'm not, but I can dig on this. Not sure I can condone spending nearly $50 on a candle, in fact I think it's quite insane. Don't know much about cannabis, but from what I remember from college dorm life, this smells nothing like it. So good.

Mods And Rockers '64 Riots

Skinny suits, Italian scooters and The Who -VS- leather jackets, cafe racers and Elvis. The feuding between the two British subcultures came to a head in 1964. The fights spilled out onto the streets and into the ocean. "You had to be one or the other during the early Sixties, otherwise you got a hiding from both groups." Can I dress like a mod but ride a bike? I guess then I'd have to kick my own ass.

A TIME TO GET -vs- LAPD

I got pulled over by one of Los Angeles' finest today, and yes, thanks for asking... got a hefty ticket. I thought an ode to my brothers in blue was in order. Here's to you LAPD.

J.C. Leyendecker

1874-1951. What a great time to be covering Men's fashion. At the top of his game, it would be hard to open a magazine or newspaper and not see one of his illustrations, unless it was the cover, then you wouldn't have to open it I suppose. After Rockwell, J.C. became the go to guy for not only SEP covers, but for everything from Arrow Shirts to the War Effort.

Porsche Panamera

The world needs a 4 door Porsche... what? No it doesn't. Really, it doesn't. Well, looks like it's getting one anyway. 2010 will bring not only the first post 2000 date without consecutive 0's, but also, yes, the 4 door Porsche. Based on the 1965 concept below, but they decided not to take anything great about the original, and make it ugly. Cheers. *Check out the comments for some nice info from a reader. Thanks Mitzikat Guidry

Broadway Joe

If you're gonna play the game, play the game like you mean it. The pictures below say it all. The old boy did it big, and with some...flair. Now you just have to take your hat off to that kind of man. They just don't make 'em like they used to. Here's to you Mr. Namath.

EBAY: BSA

Thanks to Brian A. for throwing this my way. He always has an eye out for the finds. You should see his vintage Indian he rocks. Anybody have 2k I can borrow? And a truck that can make it to PA? This thing is class. Read the description if you have a few minutes, and or care, it's almost too good to be true. The yellow, white and silver tank? C'mon, style.

WWII LEGO Kits

I loved Legos. I wish I still had all mine. Although these days, instead of all being dumped in a Tuppaware container, I have a feeling I would have them all color-coded and separated into not only lengths , but widths as well. So this guy does his own custom sets for the kid and WWII lover in all of us. Build yourself a Hellcat, or make engine sounds while rolling your Halftrack across the kitchen table. The only thing I don't miss about Legos is waking up in the middle of the night and stepping on the damn things with barefeet. Sorry about the quality of the pics... best I could do.

BUCK: Alpha Dorado

I like knives. I don't know when that started, because quite honestly, I always made fun of the type of guys that "liked knives". I started enjoying them for the craftsmanship, and the elegance of them... that's right... I said elegance when referring to a knife. Here's one of my newest. I love the knives that you could see men in the 20's carrying in their pockets to church. You know? I think this is one of them. $95

AMERICAN ICON: Jeepster

The original Willys Overland Jeepster was produced between 1948 and 1950. In 1966 Jeep revived the model and produced it until 1973. Willys thought that after the War, nobody but farmers would want Jeeps, so they came up with a rear-wheel drive model... the Jeepster. Hoping to nail a crossover market, kinda like the soccer moms in Escalades now, they failed and the Jeepster was a flop for the most part. I still love em. The later model Commandos are still some of the coolest cars out there. The HURST edition with the red and blue stripes is dead on.
