OPEN

If you're going to open a bike shop, you might as well do it like this. OPEN, in Somerville, MA, is a "stockist of new and vintage bicycles, frames, parts and accoutrements". They pride themselves "on providing a unique experience, timeless craftsmanship, impeccable service and community rapport". I'm not a huge fan, nor know much about road and track bikes, but when they're sold out of an establishment like this one, I'm buyin'. Their online store, blog and site are down and undergoing a revamp, but I'm guessing when they're up and running, it will all be as impressive as these photos.

OH hay. I live here. And went there a couple of weeks ago. The people are really awesome, and the shop is almost like a gallery. Very hip!

now that's the way to do it! portland probably has at least 10 shops that "do" what these guys do, but i can't think of any that look this good (i would welcome being proven wrong) :)

my sister, an avid cyclist of all kinds, used to live in somerville. she would love this!

I agree, I do not ride the fixed but I would buy one here. Yes sir they do it right for sure. Well visualy at least. I would love to visit and see if the sevice is as good as it looks because that is really what makes a shop awesome. In this day and age most shops are lacking in quality service. Feeling welcome and taken care of, no matter how much $ you have or how cool you look is a hard thing to find.
Stoked to see thier web site when it is up.

Cheers

Beautiful – reminds me of the simplicity of Phil Wood & Co. I remember saving up for some sealed hubs for my BMX bike at about age 10, finally getting them, and being torn about putting them on my bike vs. keeping them on the shelf to look at.

I'm not only psyched to see good 'ol Slummaville putting out enough cool to catch your eye, but realizing that their are at least two other people in the area with enough wherewithal to read your site gives me the warm and fuzzies.

That is an awesome bike shop, no doubt. Awesome post.

I really wish the emphasis would return to vintage road bikes, instead of people cannibalizing lovely vintage frames to make shitty fixed gears with ugly colors.

I like the vibe of the shop, but I fear their 'vintage' selection would be limited to a handful of track bikes, as opposed to gorgeous old Campagnolos or otherwise.

It'll be just another bike shop peddling 'bike culture' instead of great hard-to-find parts & service.

I second Joshua. I appreciate the simplicity and beauty of classic track bikes and even modern ones, but the fixie trend, which this shop is obviously capitalizing on, is getting embarrassing. If I see another set lime green deep Vs (or white like the photo above), I'm going to officially declare fixies the new rollerblades.
