I happen to think the inundation of canvas tote companies around the country has been on the verge of an epidemic, but all is forgotten when I see such originality and craftsmanship as in DM. Some would call my obsession with watches an obsession... wait. I've been slowly ticking watches off my bucket list, and I can now tick the box next to Seiko Flightmaster. It's not rare, it's not collectible, and some would argue it's even ugly, but for me, it's just one of those I needed to own. The gold bracelet was a bit much for me so I threw it on a Maratec and called it a day. What's more ridiculous than a gold chrono on a milspec strap... very little.

I'm a little more excited than one should be about a new wallet. Noah Lambert boasts this beast as being the most durable of leather wallets, and after receiving it, putting it in my back pocket, and using it for the better part of a week already, I'd tend to agree. He swears it will soften and flatten out with age and use, which is a good thing because as of now I'm walking around with Seinfeld episode in my back pocket.

After corrective back surgery, I'll be lucky to have a few dollars left to put in this thing. Small price to pay, I suppose.

I've been lucky enough to work with Pacific Sunwear a few times in the last couple of months. I've shot a couple campaigns for them, and every time we end up having a blast. My reactionary, "snapshot," photo-journalistic approach to shooting fashion and lifestyle has been a departure from their traditional "catalog" photography, but one that seems to be a nice fit for both of us.

The people at Pac have been great and are truly some of the most talented and creative folks I've had the pleasure of working with. They give just enough direction to know they're going to get what they need, but then back off and trust that I'm going to deliver in my style. I couldn't ask for anything better. If you get a sec, drop in your local mall and check the full-sized pieces out. Below are a few of my favorite shots and out-takes from the last couple of months. I don't get very excited about LookBooks these days. Even though ATG is somewhat lumped into this whole menswear/style/fashion/nonsense world, you'd be hard-pressed to find too much of it here on a regular basis (I'll leave that to fellas like Michael and Lawrence). That being said, I did find myself getting excited over the new Nudie lookbook. Yup, Nudie, as in Swedish denim we've all come to love, hate, care about or forget. As a company they're nothing new, but as a line, they seem to really be finding a groove with their '11 Fall/Winter collection.

The best part of the line might just be their introduction of the slim khaki program. I've been wearing Nudie since Traffic, in LA, was the only shop on the west coast carrying them -- back when the Slim Jims were the tightest things I could ever picture myself wearing (the start of a slippery slope). I still have a few pairs in heavy rotation. Check the brand out if you haven't in a while. It's not for everyone, with your double monks and tailored Cucinelli blazers, but for the everyday-easy-clean-fitted, it's looking more the part. A few highlight-teasers after the jump

The line is limited but concise, just what we simple folk like. Brainchild of Mat Crossan, the idea was to create a line inspired by the care-free days of skating and hopping curbs till the street lights came on, but updated for those of us who are old enough to not be called for dinner. Easy, simple and relaxed, but with enough details to keep us interested.

My good friend and very talented photographer, Andy J. Scott came down and shot some behind the scenes photos and video of a shoot I had for Pacific Sunwear last week in Venice Beach. I've been a fan of Godspeed for a minute now, so when I was asked to shoot Jason Webber of ATR, I literally jumped at the chance. Exposed welds to penis pumps, Jason is one of the most colorful motorcycle builders I've had the pleasure of meeting. He's one of those guys you bring camping just so you won't have to worry about telling good stories around the fire... he'll take care of those.

I was at one of my new favorite shopping spots, General Quarters, the other day when I felt pure, silky smooth butter. Yep. And by butter, I mean organic, domestically-grown cotton spun into perfectly washed and fitting tees by Groceries Apparel. I bought 4. Based in LA, Groceries is making some of the finest fitting, feeling, and most economically sensible tees on the market. You can lather yourself in your very own butter for around 35 bucks. Not bad for all the effort and R&D that has gone into making the company totally and completely "green." Made in Los Angeles. Made right.

I hate when "work" gets in the way of the really important things in life... like blogging. I would apologize for not having any new posts up in a minute, but it seems there are a few people out there that are willing to pay me to take pictures for them... and... well... I'd rather be doing that than blogging.

Well, what better way to kick off the week than with a little 19th century painting? None. I keep a pretty epic list on my 'notepad' app in my phone, littered with bits and pieces of things I find, see and hear that strike me as interesting. A couple days ago, I scrolled through and found the name, John Martin. Having no clue why I had found the need to record the name, I googled it and remembered. You know those bands that make fantasy metal about dragons, kingdoms in far-off lands, white knights and Ancient Forests Of Elves? Well, if they were around in the 1800s, they would've had JM do their cover art. Ahead. Of. His. Time. Epic.

After a brief stint in the word of what-the-fuck-were-they-thinking, Deth Killers returned this last season doing what they do best -- the best graphic tees this side of vintage. Even though I am, admittedly, a fan of the streetwear nouveau gone 80's metalmania look of the Des Kiraz line, I am more than happy to see the clothing line slash motorcycle club from Bushwick bring back the power and glory of the expertly-worn graphic tee. Yup, you can still scoff at the exuberantly high price tags littering their tees on the racks at Barney's while swearing you could "do that," but you didn't... so support the ones that did.

Their latest video/fashion show has everything we've come to love about DK -- bikes, fire, violence, beer and dirt. Hey, we all need role models these days.

What better way to ring in midnight on a Saturday than an all-out shooting spree at the Los Angeles Gun Club? I can think of none. Besides the gross lack of apparent safety regulations, drunk sorority girls wielding double barreled 12-gauges and the shocking amount of bullet-sized potholes BEHIND the shooting lanes, it was some of the most addictive fun I've had since... well... the last time I shot a Glock .45.

Next time you're in town, first, look me up and ask if I want to go, and second, make plans to hit the Gun Club. I do, however, suggest you miss the "after party" crowd and not go on a Saturday night. Dibs on the Mosin Nagant!

Cover Up

The main problem with today's electronics is that they're so damn ugly. If Samsung or Sony would make bluray players and stereos as attractive as 70's McIntosh amps, I might not have to hide them under beds and behind cabinet doors. For the most part, modern cameras are no different. Sure, there are a few exceptions, but as a gross generalization, cameras are just plain ugly.

Now that that's out of my system, lets focus on the people creating whole businesses out of the beautification of soulless modern electronics. Aki-Asahi point-and-shoot leather covers have got to be some of the best I've seen in a minute or two. They fit, they're done in nice leathers and colors, hide the bulk of the black plastic body, and are under 100 bucks. What more could you want? On top of the leather covers which are available in a seemingly endless variety of stitches, leather and hardware, Aki-Asahi also makes custom leatherette covers for your point and shoot, reminiscent of the old Minoltas and Leicas we all love so much. A friend basically slapped me the other day when I admitted I had never seen the 1966 French classic, A Man And A Woman (yes, brought to you by the same director responsible for one of the best short films ever made). And rightfully so. Now that I've had the pleasure, I think I might have to do some slapping. By far one of the most stylish movies I've ever seen, outranking even a few of Newman's and McQueen's. Make no mistake about it, this is a love story through and through, detailing the heartaches and beats of passion. And for those of you dudes who can't handle that, there are also some of the most hypnotic shots of Ford race cars doing what they do best. Consider yourself slapped.

We all love us some Tumblr sites. Whether it's original content or recycled, we all love to see inspirational images stacked in a tight little column, begging to be moused. Although some will argue that throwing a couple pictures of naked girls, guns, vintage cars and iconic drug-bust images will validate any Tumblr site thus making it "well-curated," others will say only a select few have the visual prowess to properly compile images in a cohesive and intriguing way. (run-on?)

In the vast sea of "well-curated" Tumblr blogs, a couple reign supreme and rule with an iron trident. Those two being Young & Feral, and of course our beloved Yimmy Yayo. Sure, except for a few personal notes on YY, if you told me these two were updated by the same person, I'd probably believe you. Especially knowing they both come from The Land Down Under. But nonetheless, both act as key witnesses for the defense in the trial of "Anyone Can Do It" vs Visual Prowess. There are a few things I can count on when I visit my parents' house -- a home cooked meal and a stack of magazines on the hallway table for me to take home. Usually it's the last couple months of GQ, (the guilty product of grandkids selling magazine subscriptions for school fundraisers) and a couple random airline magazines or WSJ inserts. Seeing as how I rarely pick up the Wall Street Journal these days since my corporate finance job (nope), it's a welcomed change of pace. And the March edition didn't disappoint.

By far the most interesting article was a highlight on Robert M. Rubin, his house and golf course. As one of the founding members of AIG Trading, Rubin found himself with more money than god at a fairly young age and set out to spend that fortune in some of the most awesome ways possible.

As if collecting and restoring Ferraris to his very personal and arguably controversial standards, Rubin figured he needed a racetrack to drive them on. Seemed like a good idea... except he happened to buy the only one in the Hamptons and was told very soon after that the notion of racing loud cars was simply unacceptable. When you gather a bunch of motorcycles, booze, babies, antiques and fire in one place, things are bound to get weird. And they did. "Shutter Speed" was basically a showing of a set of photos Scott Pommier took of Stacie London riding a BMW and spitting fire, a screening of this great film by Toast, and in unapologetic The Selvedge Yard fashion -- an excuse to throw a party. I'm sure The Selvedge Yard or some other well-written blog will have a legitimate recap, so until then I'll just leave you with an abridged photo version. More highlights after the jump.

It's been more than a minute since I've checked in with my friends over at SeaVees, and it's a good thing too. Why good? Because it gave them time to expand their line from the original canvas sneakers to a full-fledged footwear brand with more than a few models I'd kick around. Most notably, the Bayside Moc Hi. Available in brown or blue suede, these guys will have me second thinking the Clarks store in no time.

The Shapes Of Frustration

I posted a few of these a couple weeks ago, but have somehow since turned this into a full fledged series. Shot all within walking distance of my house, the shapes of frustration focuses on the accidental art of graffiti "removal." The idea of art through cover-ups in itself is nothing new. How many of you remember the Espo series when he volunteered for a clean-up crew only to leave key pieces of walls unpainted thus spelling "Espo" all over the city? Or this short film, sent to me after my first post, by Matt McCormick detailing the exact subject matter from a seemingly mockingly pretentious point of view?

The striking element in these walls isn't necessarily the colors or the compositions created in cropping (although that helps), but the level of sophistication in the layers of paint. Not to get all "art school" here, but I can't help but think an artist could work for days on a canvas and not achieve a piece as naturally executed as some of these appear to be. Makes me wonder what the hell art is anyway. And then here I come and merely take a picture of it and claim THAT to be art as well. A vicious cycle. Check out the ongoing project here.

I love that more and more people /companies are coming around and finally making a bag I can actually use. I may be the minority here, but I've always thought the tote trend to not only be useless, but a little silly. (I just made some enemies, didn't I?) Fine, one may argue I look like an overgrown school boy with my backpack, but at least you could never mistake a backpack for a purse. (Okay, now I'm just pissing people off for fun... I digress)

Taking cues from the hiking packs of yesteryear, companies are realizing that simple construction, understated lines and quality materials make for one hell of a carry-all. The recent days of backpacks needing to be more technical than purposeful are behind us, making way for the silhouettes set forth by our fathers' favorite outdoors companies. One such company is Joshu +Vela out of San Francisco. J+V bench-make their $275 bags, one at a time, using high quality, organic materials and offer them in a limited yet fulfilling variety of colors. Yes, they also make totes, but no company is perfect. Now if they'd just back those straps with some wool, we'd be in serious business.

I don't need to write about how I've been glued to BBC following these disasters, or how heartbreaking these youtube videos and facebook updates out of Japan have been, and I certainly don't need to go on about all of the organizations available for everyone to help however they can, but I will.

Any blogger will tell you, meeting people, getting invited to events and generally being treated like you're far more important than you really are all benefits of having a blog, but the real reason we do these things... is to get free shit in the mail. At least that's what bloggers tell me.

Well, needless to say, I'm like a child when it comes to bulky packages in the mail with my name on it -- especially when the name is handwritten. So when I got two such packages in one day, my head nearly exploded. I usually find myself fairly content when it comes to possessions. Hell, I nearly sold everything I own on eBay this summer. But all it takes is a small package with my name handwritten on it to make me realize that my life is now a better place with a set of Doane Paper x Jon Contino notebooks and the new copy of 'The Unknown' by Comune on Jose Gonzalez in it.

Crafted in Portland (that's in West America), these special edition notebooks feature Doane's signature grid paper and artwork by CXXVI's Jon Contino. Oh, and I love them. Chad was nice enough to send me some of his notebooks sometime ago, and aside from Chad and I sharing love for Vintage BMX, we also love us some gridded paper.

This hard-bound book from Comune features articles and pictures with Jose Gonzalez as the subject. It's basically a tell-all look into the life of a legend. Well done, looks expensive and looks even better on my shelf, this book is worth a thumbing through.

Spending his days, and most nights, as the wizard behind the curtain of Environment Furniture, Davide not only displays his style and taste through his perfectly-pieced, day-to-day ensembles, but through his entire company. Mr. Berruto is the only guy I know who can wear a vest, a pocket square, a Rolex, tweed, turquoise and a Ducati and still not only look like he read all the books on style, but wrote the damn things. Whether I catch him coming off a ride from Malibu, or elbows deep in design approvals, one thing remains constant -- pure sartorialastisity (look it up, it's a word)

Leave it to our friends to the East to nail a 20" throwback BMX. ROOTS: HOW I ROLL takes everything we love about old school styling and offers it up in tight little packages rolling on Mags. The colors, the gussets, the chrome -- they sorta pinned it all. I haven't found anyone in the States that carry them, but W-BASE has them on their site for about $750 (ouch). Just gotta figure out those pesky delivery fees.

I can't say I love the new colors Persol is throwing down on the 649s these days, but can't say I hate them either. When done right, I think they could slip into the ranks of classics. Say what you will about Persol trying to capitalize off the favoritism shown toward them from the "hipster" community with these colors, but check the archives, Persol has issued similiar colors on various models since the 60s.

First Offense -- First Apology

If you're anything like me, you were up late last night, silently questioning if there was a written set of rules for dueling. Well, in fact, there are. Back in 1777, a couple of fine Irish gents drafted up a code of conduct and set of rules that would be used until dueling fell out of fashion back in the summer of '74. The complete Code Duello is available after the jump.

Rule 13 -- No dumb shooting or firing in the air is admissible in any case. The challenger ought not to have challenged without receiving offense; and the challenged ought, if he gave offense, to have made an apology before he came on the ground; therefore, children's play must be dishonorable on one side or the other, and is accordingly prohibited.

Rule 1. The first offense requires the first apology, though the retort may have been more offensive than the insult. Example: A tells B he is impertinent, etc. B retorts that he lies; yet A must make the first apology because he gave the first offense, and then (after one fire) B may explain away the retort by a subsequent apology.

Rule 2. But if the parties would rather fight on, then after two shots each (but in no case before), B may explain first, and A apologize afterward.

N.B. The above rules apply to all cases of offenses in retort not of stronger class than the example.

Rule 3. If a doubt exist who gave the first offense, the decision rests with the seconds; if they won't decide, or can't agree, the matter must proceed to two shots, or to a hit, if the challenger require it.

Rule 4. When the lie direct is the first offense, the aggressor must either beg pardon in express terms; exchange two shots previous to apology; or three shots followed up by explanation; or fire on till a severe hit be received by one party or the other.

Rule 5. As a blow is strictly prohibited under any circumstances among gentlemen, no verbal apology can be received for such an insult. The alternatives, therefore -- the offender handing a cane to the injured party, to be used on his own back, at the same time begging pardon; firing on until one or both are disabled; or exchanging three shots, and then asking pardon without proffer of the cane.

If swords are used, the parties engage until one is well blooded, disabled, or disarmed; or until, after receiving a wound, and blood being drawn, the aggressor begs pardon.

N.B. A disarm is considered the same as a disable. The disarmer may (strictly) break his adversary's sword; but if it be the challenger who is disarmed, it is considered as ungenerous to do so.

In the case the challenged be disarmed and refuses to ask pardon or atone, he must not be killed, as formerly; but the challenger may lay his own sword on the aggressor's shoulder, then break the aggressor's sword and say, "I spare your life!" The challenged can never revive the quarrel -- the challenger may.

Rule 6. If A gives B the lie, and B retorts by a blow (being the two greatest offenses), no reconciliation can take place till after two discharges each, or a severe hit; after which B may beg A's pardon humbly for the blow and then A may explain simply for the lie; because a blow is never allowable, and the offense of the lie, therefore, merges in it. (See preceding rules.)

N.B. Challenges for undivulged causes may be reconciled on the ground, after one shot. An explanation or the slightest hit should be sufficient in such cases, because no personal offense transpired.

Rule 7. But no apology can be received, in any case, after the parties have actually taken ground, without exchange of fires.

Rule 8. In the above case, no challenger is obliged to divulge his cause of challenge (if private) unless required by the challenged so to do before their meeting.

Rule 9. All imputations of cheating at play, races, etc., to be considered equivalent to a blow; but may be reconciled after one shot, on admitting their falsehood and begging pardon publicly.

Rule 10. Any insult to a lady under a gentleman's care or protection to be considered as, by one degree, a greater offense than if given to the gentleman personally, and to be regulated accordingly.

Rule 11. Offenses originating or accruing from the support of ladies' reputations, to be considered as less unjustifiable than any others of the same class, and as admitting of slighter apologies by the aggressor: this to be determined by the circumstances of the case, but always favorable to the lady.

Rule 12. In simple, unpremeditated recontres with the smallsword, or couteau de chasse, the rule is -- first draw, first sheath, unless blood is drawn; then both sheath, and proceed to investigation.

Rule 13. No dumb shooting or firing in the air is admissible in any case. The challenger ought not to have challenged without receiving offense; and the challenged ought, if he gave offense, to have made an apology before he came on the ground; therefore, children's play must be dishonorable on one side or the other, and is accordingly prohibited.

Rule 14. Seconds to be of equal rank in society with the principals they attend, inasmuch as a second may either choose or chance to become a principal, and equality is indispensible.

Rule 15. Challenges are never to be delivered at night, unless the party to be challenged intend leaving the place of offense before morning; for it is desirable to avoid all hot-headed proceedings.

Rule 16. The challenged has the right to choose his own weapon, unless the challenger gives his honor he is no swordsman; after which, however, he can decline any second species of weapon proposed by the challenged.

Rule 17. The challenged chooses his ground; the challenger chooses his distance; the seconds fix the time and terms of firing.

Rule 18. The seconds load in presence of each other, unless they give their mutual honors they have charged smooth and single, which should be held sufficient.

Rule 19. Firing may be regulated -- first by signal; secondly, by word of command; or thirdly, at pleasure -- as may be agreeable to the parties. In the latter case, the parties may fire at their reasonable leisure, but second presents and rests are strictly prohibited.

Rule 20. In all cases a miss-fire is equivalent to a shot, and a snap or non-cock is to be considered as a miss-fire.

Rule 21. Seconds are bound to attempt a reconciliation before the meeting takes place, or after sufficient firing or hits, as specified.

Rule 22. Any wound sufficient to agitate the nerves and necessarily make the hand shake, must end the business for that day.

Rule 23. If the cause of the meeting be of such a nature that no apology or explanation can or will be received, the challenged takes his ground, and calls on the challenger to proceed as he chooses; in such cases, firing at pleasure is the usual practice, but may be varied by agreement.

Rule 24. In slight cases, the second hands his principal but one pistol; but in gross cases, two, holding another case ready charged in reserve.

Rule 25. Where seconds disagree, and resolve to exchange shots themselves, it must be at the same time and at right angles with their principals, thus:

If with swords, side by side, with five paces interval.

N.B. All matters and doubts not herein mentioned will be explained and cleared up by application to the committee, who meet alternately at Clonmel and Galway, at the quarter sessions, for that purpose.
